Foreign universities build links with local institutions

FOREIGN educational institutions taking part in the two-day Higher Education Expo 2019 at Bridex Hall 2, Jerudong said that their participation in the event would build linkages with institutions of higher learning in Brunei and help promote themselves and the scholarships they have to offer.

Director of Education at Universitas Hasanuddin in Makassar, Indonesia Dr Ida Leida Maria told the Sunday Bulletin at the expo yesterday that besides the scholarships offered by the Government of Indonesia, universities in the country also provide their own scholarships and organise student exchange programmes.

“Some of the Indonesian universities taking part in the expo have links with Bruneian institutions such as Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Laksamana College of Business,” she said.

“We hope to cooperate [with our Brunei counterparts] both on [an inbound and outbound basis] through MoUs. To be a world class university, the institution must forge linkages with various countries.”

“This is the second time our university is participating in the expo in recent years,” she added.

“During this year’s expo, four universities from Indonesia are taking part including Universitas Hasanuddin in Makassar, Universitas Negeri Malang, and Diponegoro University, a public university in Semarang, Central Java.”

Business Development and Planning Manager at the National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore Imelda Rostam meanwhile noted that it is participating in the expo to create awareness on the institute.

“We are also hoping to meet some of our institute’s alumni here, including a PhD graduate now teaching at UBD,” she said.

The Sunday Bulletin also caught up with Aimi Asilah, one of the students who will be studying in Japan under the Japan Scholarship programme.

“I will pursue my PhD (Research) in Hydrogen Energy, a new programme, part of which will be undertaken at Brunei LNG,” she said at the Embassy of Japan booth at the expo.

“It is a new type of energy that [is just about to be embraced] in Brunei Darussalam, and I am hoping to work in Japan upon the completion of my study.”

“Four major companies in Japan are collaborating with Brunei Darussalam [in this hydrogen initiative].

It is also related to the Olympic Games to be held in Tokyo next year when hydrogen will be sent from Brunei Darussalam to Japan,” Aimi added, sharing that she is one of three recipients selected for the Japanese Scholarship this year.

“I will join Tsukuba University in Tokyo this April. The other recipients will study at Hokkaido University and Waseda University.”
